Strengthening Families

Strengthening Families provides a way for families to get coordinated access to services. The philosophy is that children, young people and their families/whanau have the opportunity to reach their full potential and participate positively in society.

Strengthening Families is run in a way that meets the unique needs of each family/whanau. It’s about making sure that health, education, and the social services work together. Whanau can self-refer or different agencies can refer. It is not compulsory but can be a very good way for a whanau to seek help before the problems get too big.

For further information, contact our coordinator about this free service.

Phone Lori on 027 267 2830.

Early Years Services Hub (EYSH) - Murupara

The hub provides families with young children, with a more coordinated and easier access to health, education and social services that they may need to engage.

The hub coordinator can set up the first meeting, knows all the services well and can keep whanau connected. The coordinator can support you in those first meetings if the whanau would like that support.

We currently provide this service in Murupara and surrounding communities.

For further information, contact our coordinator, Rebecca on 021 509 414.

Home Interaction Programme for Parents and Youngsters (HIPPY) - Murupara

HIPPY is a home based programme that supports parents in becoming actively involved in the learning of their pre-school children.

Parents and children work together for 15 minutes daily with story books, puzzles and learning games. Our HIPPY tutors come to your home to teach you how to do that.

Currently this programme is offered in the Murupara and surrounding communities.

For further information, contact out coordinator Fiona Winslade on 07 366 5578 or 021 509 211.

Safe Kawerau Kids Injury Prevention Project (SKKIPP)

This project is about providing training, resources, and expertise to work towards lessening injuries to our 0-14 year old children.

Working in the ECE and Kohanga Reo environment as well as schools, providing Professional Development for teachers is one avenue. Working with children themselves, it’s about finding ways to teach basic personal safety.

Examples include, safety in the home, fire safety, water safety, road safety, car seat restraint training, safety in team sports, scooter/skateboard usage and other areas. Working with parents is also part of this project.

Strategies for Kids, Information for Parents (SKIP)

The aim is to work towards all children being safe and nurtured, and to grow into happy and capable adults. We do this by developing the capacity of communities to support parents to build positive relationships with their children.

We share the positive SKIP parenting messages and strategies by giving out resources, promoting parenting programmes, and organising events and training.

For more information, contact Vinnie on 07 308 4098 ext. 206.

Parents as First Teachers (PAFT)

Parents as First Teachers (PAFT) is based on the philosophy that parents are their children’s first and most important teachers.

PAFT can help families to:

  • understand their child’s growth and development
  • encourage that growth and development
  • ensure child safety and well being
  • gain confidence in parenting skills
  • detect early health and learning problems
  • help their child:
  • develop good language skills
  • increase problem solving abilities
  • develop social skills

A PAFT team member will visit your home monthly for the first 3 years of your child’s life. This programme is available in Whakatane, Kawerau, Opotiki and surrounding areas.

For more information, contact Eastbay REAP on 07 308 4098. Or contact Lee (Whakatane) on 021 189 9240, Carol (Kawerau) on 027 235 9085, or Norma (Opotiki) on 027 431 5777.
